Alright, time to push you out of the nest and have you spread your wings a bit. You're on your own to analyze the I-vi-ii-V improvisation that I play in this video.
It's transcribed in its entirety, so think about the concepts that we've been working on and see if you can annotate the various approaches I take throughout the solo. You can analyze the chart and figure out what's happening in theoretical terms, but I hope you'll then review the transcription again while letting the video play so that you can also get it in your ear. Ultimately, there's no substitute for playing it yourself. Take your time, working on just one lick at a time if you need to. If we're both doing our jobs well, you'll start to get a sense of that musical foresight that I've been discussing, such that you know where to take a melody over the next change and what it will sound like when you get there. As a player, it's so gratifying to nail that down. Listeners will thank you for it, too. If you get a little stuck analyzing this solo, don't worry: there's a second notation following the first with the annotations. But don't peek until you've given it your best shot. |
