Adding pedal tones - notes that stay consistent while other notes move - is a very effective way of filling out and expanding a part. Pedal tones can be above or below the moving line. On the guitar we most often hear pedals on open strings, and usually the pedal tone is a lower tone.

In many cases, as in the head of my tune "Cold Gold" and the other examples here, you'll need good right-hand technique to hit the pedal while still attacking the moving line with conviction. A hybrid technique incorporating both pick and fingers allows you to put your pick to work on the lick while available right-hand fingers grab the open-string pedals.
