This is where improvised solos get really interesting, both from the perspective of the player as well as the listener. You'll hear a huge difference in your playing when you start improvising with the chords in mind instead of using a single harmonic approach for your whole solo.
When your improvisation outlines and emphasizes the chord changes, your solo will be much more melodic, more interesting to play, and more likely to connect with the audience. If this is a new approach for you, it'll take some work but I know you'll be thrilled with the results. In the video as in the notation, I make it clear which options I'm thinking about as each chord change comes around. As you start to get good at this, you'll recognize how thinking just a little bit ahead - that is, thinking about what specific chord is coming next - will completely transform your improvisations. |
